Reading the signs
The photo from four years ago: how to tell whether it is really thinner

The hardest part of thinning is not knowing whether it is happening. Hair looks different in every light and every mood, everyone you ask says it looks fine, and you cannot remember what it used to look like. But you have thousands of photos on your phone, and they can settle it.
Find the right photos
You want three or four from four to six years ago, before the last pregnancy if there was one, and three or four from the last month. The most useful ones are not the nice ones. They are the accidental ones: the back of your head in someone else’s photo, you bending over a buggy, a selfie taken from too high, a kitchen photo under the spotlights, the school-gate one in flat daylight. Look for the same angle in both sets; overhead, front hairline, and the back of the head at a party are the ones that come up most.
What to compare
The parting from above. Not its width in isolation — partings vary with how you have combed them — but how much scalp shows along its length and whether the hair either side stands up or lies flat.
The front hairline. Where does it start at the corners, relative to the eyebrows? Is there a step between the corner and the middle that was not there before?
Not sure which one is you?

Twelve quick questions. We tell you what we think is going on, what to do about it, and we say so if it is something we cannot help with.
Start the quiz →The ponytail. If you have a photo of it from the side or behind, compare its thickness at the base and how far down it stays full.
The overall silhouette. Hair that has thinned diffusely sits closer to the head. Compare the width of your hair against the width of your face in the two sets.
Correct for the variables
Length: longer hair looks thinner at the ends and flatter at the root; compare at similar lengths where you can. Colour: lighter hair shows scalp less than dark; if you have gone lighter it may look better than it is, and vice versa. Wet or product-heavy hair always looks thinner. Fringe or no fringe changes the hairline entirely.
Then do the measurements
Photos tell you whether it changed. Two measurements tell you whether it is still changing. Ponytail circumference: gather the hair at the nape, wrap a soft tape measure around the base, write the number down and repeat monthly. Parting width: comb the parting in the same place, photograph from above under the same light on the same day of the month, and compare. The at-home checks article covers both in detail.
If they look different
Then it is real, and you were not imagining it, and the people who said it looked fine were being kind or were not looking. The next question is not whether but what: which pattern, how long, and what has been tried. That is what the quiz asks, and the answer it gives is the explanation that fits your photos.
